Cocktails have a blurry and mysterious but catchy and delightful history. Among the stories explaining their creation, the following are the most common and attractive:

  • A female innkeeper used to spice up the drinks she served to soldiers with rooster feathers
  • Antoine Amedie Peychaud’s invention of the Peychaud bitter and his habit of serving toddies in eggcups
  • The drink served in a “Coquetier” (eggcup – ‘cocktay’ would be the pronunciation in English)
  • Tavern owners’ tradition to collect cask (cock) tailings and sell them as mixed beverages

Perhaps there are even more stories regarding cocktail origins out there. However, I am willing to bet that these stories are the last thing on your mind as you dip your lips into your favorite cocktail. You want to enjoy more of it, and this can be difficult if you have to go to a bar for it.
